Uniform

Our Chesterton uniform is an important part of school life which helps children to settle into school and feel a sense of belonging. We expect parents to ensure that their children are dressed correctly for school every day.

Early Years (Nursery, Reception and Year 1)

Early Years (Nursery, Reception and Year 1) is a time when we help children to develop their independence, which includes looking after their belongings and not losing them, and also getting themselves ready for PE and then back into their school clothes.

For this reason children in Nursery, Reception and Year 1 do not wear a tie, formal shirt or blazer. Part of the children's transition from our Early Years building to Year 2 includes the more grown up dress code, and our experience is that children respond well to this.

The uniform for Early Years is:

  • Grey skirt, pinafore dress or trousers
  • Chesterton long-sleeve jumper
  • Grey socks or tights
  • White polo shirt
  • Plain black school shoes (not trainers)

Years 2 to 6

The uniform for Years 2 to 6 is:

  • Grey skirt, pinafore dress or trousers
  • Chesterton long-sleeve jumper
  • Grey socks or tights
  • White shirt
  • Chesterton tie
  • Chesterton blazer
  • Plain black school shoes (not trainers)

Where to buy uniform

Most of our uniform items are readily available from supermarkets, with just a few Chesterton-branded items needing to be purchased directly from the school online shop as shown in the table below.

The table below details each uniform item and the Year group required to wear it. It also shows which items must be bought directly from the school online shop, and which can be purchased from a supermarket or on the High Street.

Please note that children are expected to have a Chesterton-branded bag to bring their things to school and have the option of either a book bag, or a back pack. In addition, children are required to have a Chesterton-branded PE bag to bring their PE kit to school.

PE kit

Nursery and Reception

Children in Nursery or Reception are not required to have separate PE clothing. Our youngest pupils do PE in their school clothes, with the addition of plimsolls or trainers in place of their school shoes.

Years 1 to 6

Children in Years 1 to 6 must wear the Chesterton PE polo shirt and Chesterton PE shorts for every PE session. If the weather is cold children are allowed to wear black tracksuit bottoms.

Appropriate footwear

Children in all Year groups must have trainers or plimsolls to change into for PE to ensure that they can actively and safely join in with all activities. Unfortunately we cannot allow children to take part in PE in school shoes or bare foot.

To minimise lost property and to keep the corridors as tidy and safe as possible, we ask that children keep their trainers/plimsolls and PE kit in a Chesterton PE bag (not a carrier bag) on their peg.

PE item Year group Available from supermarket/High St School uniform supplier only Price from school supplier
Chesterton PE bag All £3.50
Chesterton white polo shirt 1 - 6 £6.35

Chesterton PE shorts + 28" 1-6  £5.22
Black tracksuit trousers (optional for cold weather) All (optional) N/A
Trainers or plimsolls All N/A

Unfortunately we cannot take responsibility for lost items of clothing, and do not have the space to store lost property. We strongly advise that all items of clothing and kit are clearly labelled and that children are reminded to put all PE items into their Chesterton PE bag at the end of each session.

Wet and cold weather clothing

Outdoor play and learning are a really important part of our school life. If it's cold or rainy we expect children to come to school in appropriate clothing for the weather. If children walk to school in wellies or trainers, we expect them to have proper school shoes to change into once they arrive.

We also ask that parents ensure that their child has a warm, waterproof coat.

Warm and sunny weather clothing

Parts of our playground and outdoor areas are quite exposed to the sun. In warm sunny weather we ask that parents apply sun cream to their children before they come to school as this is not something that staff are permitted to do. We also advise that they have a hat and a water bottle. We don't allow children to wear flip-flops or open–toed shoes of any kind. In particular this is to avoid accidents while playing outside.

Mobile phones and valuable items

Mobile phones and any other personal devices are not allowed on school premises. Our Year 6 'permission to walk home alone form' (available from the school office) includes a section for parents/carers to identify whether their child will have a phone or other device with them. We expect these devices to be handed into the school office every day on arrival, and they can be picked up again at the end of the day.

Any child found with a mobile phone or other device on school premises will have it confiscated and their parent/carer will be called to come and get it from us at the end of the day. If we have reason to believe that the device may have been used to take unauthorised photographs of other pupils or staff during the school day we reserve the right to remove those photographs from the device before returning it to the pupil.

We cannot accept any responsibility for money or other valuables and we strongly advise that children do not bring any of these items into school.
