Our approach to Basic Skills

At Chesterton we place a huge focus on all our children being fluent in their basic skills by the time they leave Year 6.

In English this means being able to spell age-related words correctly, including all High Frequency words and having legible joined up handwriting. In Maths this means being able to recite their times tables (up to 12x12) accurately. 

Children practise basic skills within every lesson and we hold many competitions throughout the year to celebrate our successes. Parents and carers can find resources to support your child at home below:

English

Years 1 and 2 - need to know the first 100 High Frequency words at this link.

Years 3, 4 and 5 - need to know the first 100 High Frequency words and the next 200 High Frequency words at this link.
